While I fully believe that every person has a right to his or her own beliefs, this Chick-Fil-A controversy is getting out of hand. Dan Cathy defended his own viewpoint on marriage in his answer to reporters. He, thankfully, as an American, has that right. On the flip side, yes gay rights activists also have a right to protest against what Cathy said; but I’ve seen one too many posts on facebook and twitter either for or against Chick-Fil-A. Dan Cathy is the president of a multi-billion dollar fast food chain. Why are we worrying about his feelings? He will be just fine. There is absolutely no need for people to sit for hours in drive-thru lines to “support” his plight. There are other, much MUCH more important things that I would love to see people argue, share, and support on social media.
This summer I’ve had the opportunity to work in a research lab looking for new antimalarial drugs to treat malaria. Its maybe the hardest work I have ever had to do, but every single day I get one step closer to finding a drug that will not only hopefully save lives of millions of southeast Asians, Africans, and South Americans, but of American soldiers currently fighting for our country. Still, there are between 300-500 million cases of malaria each year, and around 1,000,000 deaths, usually in children under 5 years old. If we want to talk about fair, let’s discuss that. How is it fair to allow millions of children to die from a 100% preventable disease, when, for the cost of a chicken sandwich, waffle fries, and that great lemonade you could donate a life saving mosquito net. I think we can all agree that it might be a bigger issue. Visit nothingbutnets.net to donate.
If you want to unite for gay rights, how about standing for the LGBT communities in the 8 countries where they are killed for being gay. There are over 80 countries where being gay or supporting gay rights carries a hefty jail sentence. Boycotting Chick-Fil-A will not save those people; it will just make you want to eat chicken a little bit more.
So while standing for your beliefs is one of the greatest rights we have, why not use that right to make a major change in a world that has so many larger problems than what Dan Cathy said in an interview.
Accept one another, then, just as Christ accepted you, in order to bring praise to God.
Saturday night date got cancelled…. So it’s Saturday night chick flick and cookies :)
